A Labradoodle is a crossbreed of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. The breed was first developed in the late 20th century to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people with allergies.
Poodles are considered to be hypoallergenic because they produce less dander and their hair does not shed as much as other breeds. However, Labradors are not considered hypoallergenic because they do shed and produce dander.
The amount of dander and shedding of a Labradoodle can vary depending on the coat type and the ratio of Labrador Retriever and Poodle genetics in the individual dog. Some Labradoodles may have coats that are more like Poodles, which shed less and produce less dander, and are therefore considered to be more hypoallergenic. Other Labradoodles may have coats that are more like Labradors, which shed more and produce more dander, and are therefore considered to be less hypoallergenic.
It’s worth noting that there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog or cat. Even the breeds that are considered to be hypoallergenic produce some level of dander, saliva, and urine that can trigger an allergic reaction.
It’s recommended that people with allergies considering a Labradoodle, or any other breed of dog, meet and spend time with the dog before committing to bring it home, and see how their allergy react to the dog.
